OUTREACH REPORT ONE
The survey conducted on June 15, 2023, in Namutumba District was a vital step in introducing the transformative programs of the Kibwa Women Self-Help Group. With the invaluable support of LC1 Chairman Mr. Mugabe Grace and LC2 Chairman Mr. Isabirye Peter, the initiative successfully engaged the community and highlighted the urgent need for vocational training for teenage mothers who had dropped out of school due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The enthusiastic participation of local residents underscored the community’s readiness for change and their desire for practical solutions to economic challenges. The feedback gathered will guide the implementation of tailored training programs in tailoring and liquid soap making, directly addressing the needs and aspirations of these young mothers.
As we move forward, the commitment to empowering these women through skill development will not only help them regain confidence and financial independence but also foster a supportive network within the community. This initiative marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to uplift young mothers in Namutumba, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities necessary to create brighter futures for themselves and their families. The Kibwa Women Self-Help Group looks forward to turning this vision into reality, paving the way for lasting change and empowerment in the region.

Outreach Report THREE
Outreach Report: Addressing Sanitation and Hygiene Challenges at Doranatha Infant and Primary School
This report presents the findings of a survey conducted by the Kibwa Women Self-Help Group on 16th October 2024 at Doranatha Infant and Primary School, located in Busunju Town Council. The school, owned by Mrs. Bakuna Dorothy and her husband Nathan, is facing severe sanitation and hygiene challenges, particularly concerning the condition of the latrines used by both students and staff. This situation poses significant public health risks, including outbreaks of diseases like cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, and parasitic infections.
Given the urgent nature of the situation and the limited financial resources of the school, this report highlights the need for external support to address these pressing issues.
Doranatha Infant and Primary School is a key educational institution in Busunju Town Council, providing education to a large number of students in the area. However, the school’s infrastructure, particularly the sanitation facilities, is in a state of disrepair. The latrines currently in use are overcrowded, poorly maintained, and lack basic hygiene standards. These conditions contribute to an elevated risk of sanitation-related diseases, which is particularly concerning in a school environment where children are more susceptible to such infections.
The owners of the school, Mrs. Bakuna Dorothy and her husband Nathan, have acknowledged these challenges and expressed a strong desire to improve the sanitation facilities. However, due to limited financial resources, they are unable to make the necessary improvements without external assistance.
The survey conducted by the Kibwa Women Self-Help Group identified several critical issues related to the sanitation and hygiene conditions at Doranatha Infant and Primary School:
- Poor Condition of Latrines:
- The latrines are dilapidated, with broken doors, leaking roofs, and inadequate ventilation.
- The facilities are overcrowded, with insufficient toilets to accommodate the large number of students and staff.
- The lack of proper waste disposal systems increases the likelihood of contamination.
- Health Risks:
- The current latrine conditions increase the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever.
- Helminth infections (parasitic worms) are common due to inadequate hygiene and exposure to unsanitary conditions.
- The absence of soap, water storage, and handwashing facilities makes it difficult to maintain proper hygiene.
- Lack of Resources:
- The school is struggling financially and does not have the necessary funds to address the poor sanitation conditions.
- The owners are committed to improving the facilities but are unable to do so without external financial support.
There is an immediate need for external support to address the sanitation crisis at Doranatha Infant and Primary School. Given the critical health risks posed by the current conditions, the Kibwa Women Self-Help Group recommends the following interventions:
- Renovation of Latrine Facilities: The school requires new, safe, and functional latrines to ensure that the students and staff have access to hygienic sanitation. This includes constructing latrines with proper ventilation, waste disposal systems, and sufficient capacity to accommodate the school’s population.
- Provision of Hygiene Materials: The school needs supplies such as soap, water storage tanks, and handwashing stations to promote proper hygiene practices among students and staff. Access to these materials will help reduce the risk of disease transmission.
- Health Education Programs: There is a need for a continuous education program on hygiene and sanitation. This program should focus on teaching students and staff the importance of handwashing, safe water use, and other hygiene practices to prevent disease outbreaks.
- Ongoing Maintenance: To ensure that the sanitation facilities remain functional and hygienic, the school requires support for regular maintenance and monitoring of the facilities.
The Kibwa Women Self-Help Group is reaching out to local and international organizations, government agencies, and individuals who can offer support to Doranatha Infant and Primary School. The goal is to secure the necessary funding and materials to:
- Renovate and rebuild the school’s latrines,
- Provide hygiene materials like soap, handwashing stations, and water storage,
- Implement a health education program on sanitation and hygiene.
External support is essential for addressing these urgent sanitation challenges and ensuring that the students and staff at Doranatha Infant and Primary School can continue to thrive in a safe and healthy environment.
The current sanitation and hygiene situation at Doranatha Infant and Primary School is untenable and poses serious health risks to the students and staff. The support of external partners is crucial to improving the sanitation infrastructure and promoting better health and hygiene practices within the school. By addressing these challenges, we can help ensure that the school remains a safe, healthy place for learning, free from preventable diseases.
The Kibwa Women Self-Help Group calls on all stakeholders to come together to support Doranatha Infant and Primary School in improving its sanitation facilities, thereby contributing to the well-being and future of the children who depend on this school for their education.
This outreach report serves as a call to action for urgent support to improve sanitation at Doranatha Infant and Primary School and ensure that students and staff are protected from preventable diseases.
Outreach Report: Identifying Urgent Needs at Doranatha Primary School
Introduction
In October 2023, a comprehensive survey was conducted at Doranatha Primary School, aimed at assessing the urgent needs related to sanitation and student welfare. Officers from Kibwa Self Help Group engaged with the school directors and students to gather firsthand information about the challenges the school faces in providing a safe and conducive learning environment.
Key Findings
- Sanitation Challenges
The survey revealed alarming conditions regarding the school’s sanitation facilities. The existing latrines are in a state of disrepair, posing serious health risks to the students. Overcrowding and lack of maintenance have led to unsanitary conditions that could easily trigger disease outbreaks, jeopardizing the health of the entire school community. - Infrastructure Deficiencies
In addition to sanitation issues, Doranatha Primary School suffers from inadequate infrastructure. The classrooms are overcrowded and lack basic amenities, making it difficult for teachers to deliver effective lessons. The kitchen facilities are similarly inadequate, hindering the provision of nutritious meals for the students, many of whom rely on school food for their daily sustenance. - Vulnerability of Students
A significant number of students at Doranatha are orphans or come from families that struggle financially. Their guardians often cannot afford school fees or basic necessities, leaving many children unable to attend school regularly or fully engage in their education. This cycle of poverty significantly impacts their academic performance and overall well-being. - Voices from the Community
During the interactions, school directors and students openly shared their experiences and the challenges they face. They expressed a strong desire for improvements in sanitation, classroom facilities, and financial support to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive.
Conclusion
The findings from this outreach underscore the urgent need for intervention at Doranatha Primary School. The combination of poor sanitation, inadequate infrastructure, and the financial vulnerability of students creates an environment that is not conducive to learning. Immediate action is necessary to address these issues and ensure that every child at Doranatha has access to a safe, supportive educational environment.
