In the picturesque countryside of rural communities of Uganda, Schools stand as a testament to resilience and hope. However, as you step inside, the harsh reality of their condition becomes clear. Classrooms once alive with the sounds of learning now show signs of severe wear and tear—crumbling walls, inadequate lighting, and overcrowded spaces. The latrines are in disrepair, posing serious health risks, while the kitchen struggles to provide even the most basic meals for the children who rely on them.
The schools serve community where education is not just a privilege, but a lifeline. Over 300 children walk long distances each day, their dreams fuelled by the promise of knowledge. Yet, the crumbling infrastructure casts a shadow over their aspirations. Dedicated teachers strive to make a difference, but the lack of adequate facilities makes their mission increasingly difficult.
For these children, education should be a sanctuary, but the conditions they face are far from ideal. Many arrive hungry, their stomachs growling, and the knowledge that their peers in urban areas have access to modern facilities weighs heavily on them. The cycle of poverty looms large, and without intervention, their dreams risk fading into the background.
Kibwa Women self_help group believes that every child deserves access to safe and conducive learning environments. We envision a future where classrooms are vibrant, latrines are clean, and kitchens provide nourishing meals. We aim to transform the schools into places where children can thrive—physically, emotionally, and academically.

HEALTH
Doranatha Infant and Primary School, located in Busunju Town Council, is currently facing significant challenges related to sanitation and hygiene. During a survey conducted by the Kibwa Women Self-Help Group on 16th October 2024, it was observed that the existing latrines used by students and staff are in poor condition. This poses a serious risk of disease outbreaks like cholera, Dysentery, Typhoid Fever, Helminth Infections (Parasitic Worms) among others. Given the limited financial resources of the school, owned by Bakuna Dorothy and her husband Nathan, there is a critical need for external support to improve these facilities
A Cry for Cleanliness:
In the heart of Busunju Town Council, Doranatha Infant and Primary School stands as a vital institution for its community, nurturing young minds and inspiring hope for a brighter future. Overflowing and unsanitary, they are far from the safe and clean environment that every child deserves. This situation not only affects the children’s physical health but also their ability to focus on learning. Many students hesitate to use the facilities, leading to discomfort and even health complications.
Teachers and staff do their best to encourage proper hygiene practices, but the conditions make it nearly impossible. The lack of adequate sanitation facilities is a daily struggle, and it becomes a source of embarrassment and shame for the children. They deserve a space where they can learn without worry, but the current situation is a constant reminder of the challenges they face.
At Doranatha, education should be a path to empowerment, yet the dilapidated toilets hinder this journey. The children are not just learners; they are future leaders, doctors, and change-makers. But how can they aspire to greatness when their basic needs are unmet?
